Meet The Nightingales

"jewellery knowledge has seeped into me by default" Diane Nightingale

Nightingale to most evokes the image of a petit passerine bird known for its subtle colours though mostly for its powerful and beautiful song, the ‘night songstress’. In this case Nightingale refers to a powerful and beautiful unit of two people and a passion for jewellery.

Stephen Nightingale has engrossed himself in the jewellery industry for 46 years. His younger self tackled a job as a shop assistant in a jewellery store at the age of 16 and from there on Stephen has developed an extensive career in jewellery, tackling almost every role in the industry.

Diane Nightingale has been married to jewellery for the same length of time. In the beginning Diane would help Stephen revise for exams that would progress his career as a jeweller - “jewellery knowledge has seeped into me by default.”

Diane and Stephen have been happily married for 42 years, and have been captivated by one and other for many more. Their timeline of love entwines with their passion and knowledge of jewellery, all of which has been poured into Nightingale.

  • Stephen falls in love with the trade

“My first introduction to jewellery was when I became apprenticed to the National Association of Goldsmiths (NAG), way back when I left school. I soon became fascinated, almost to the point of obsession, with all things jewellery.”

“Whilst apprenticed I worked in a retail jewellery store gaining sales and product experience and greater knowledge via the NAG courses.” Diane worked just two doors down from Stephen’s place of work in a quaint little newsagents in which Stephen would find excuses to frequent the store “he came in about 3 times a day and bought copious amounts of (probably uneaten) polo mints. I had no idea he liked me at the time”.

  • First Date

17 year old Stephen asked Diane to go bowling the following Saturday. “I said no!” Diane exclaims, “I was just so surprised, everyone in the shop knew he liked me except well...me!” Stephen was delighted to find Diane had come to his jewellers (for the first time) to change her mind. They went bowling that night.

“Hard studying and theory and practical exams gained me my Retail Jewellers Diploma and through further study I gained entry as a Fellow to the Gemmological Association of Great Britain, a high award in the jewellery industry. I was elated as, at only 22 I was the youngest to receive this honour in the history of the association.”
